If I were capable of doing real magic, what would I do?
"Few effects in magic resonate as strongly as a good transformation because, like plucking a gold coin from the air, it's an action which addresses and fulfills the question of need. Suppose the magician exhibited a piece of lead and transformed it into gold? Would that action not touch a person on a fundamental level, not address his most secret and persistent dreams? Of course it would, which is why the practice of alchemy is thousands of years old. A good transformation not only addresses the question of need but encompasses our most cherished and fervent desires.
Who among us hasn't had occasion to wish we could change one thing into another? Who hasn't been locked out and momentarily wished for the ability to change a coin into the key needed? Who hasn't admired an item he couldn't afford and briefly wished he could change the ones in his pocket into hundreds? If one were capable of doing magic, would one opt to make an object levitate? Would one desire the ability to pass one solid through another, or make objects disappear, or move from place to place? Who among us wouldn't desire the ability to manipulate the natural world in such a way that we could change one thing into another? It is the stuff of which dreams are made. Here's a collection of transformations I hope you enjoy. They range in difficulty from very easy to somewhat knacky, but all are within reach of the average performer. It's my hope you'll use these transformations to enhance both existing tricks in your repertoire as well as your act itself. Quite often it's the little bits between tricks, casually changing one thing into another, that the audience remembers long after the show is over." - Jim Coles
