A few words on beginning to learn coin magic
The use of coins to perform magical effects has never reached the same level of popularity amongst magicians as card or sponge ball magic, dispite their older heritage and inherent charm as a magic prop. one reason for this may be the need for high levels of dexterity to perform some of the most famous of effects. It may also be the fact that much of the work already in existence relies very heavily on performance skills and misdirection in there presentation, and this may put off many beginners. Dispite it's smaller following, coin magic can be very rewarding. The principles and techniques developed as a result of it's study, will advance beginners progress across the whole spectrum of magic performance. The easy availability of coins allows practice in just about any situation, or circumstance. I can think of no other prop, that will never wear out, is always at hand, fits into even the smallest of pockets, and can be swapped for goods and services in every shop in the land, as soon as you become tired of practice!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where to start? To begin to learn tricks using coins there are several basic sleights of the hand that must be developed and mastered. The most important of all in my opinion is the classic palm. Without this central slight, very little can be achieved, outside of self working coin tricks. Once the Classic palm has been developed to a unable degree, it becomes possible to progress to the other central sleights that need to be studied These sleights include: The Thumb Palm The Finger Palm The Back Palm The Retention Pass The Retention of vision Pass The Steal The Drop
Although there are hundreds of good books on coin magic, the one I would recommend to the beginner would have to be Modern Coin Magic by J.B.Bobo published by Dover Press Once the basics have been studied, I would recommend Coin Magic by David Roth, Published by Koufhman and Greenburg.
If You learn best from being shown, then pick up the three volume DVD set 'Expert Coin Magic Made Easy' By David Roth, produced by A1 Multimedia
Good luck in your practice, and I promise all the hard work will really pay off!!!!
